Health Benefits of Cocoa

Cocoa is a rich source of polyphenols which are natural antioxidants found in various plant foods - especially flavanols. These compounds have been linked with lower blood pressure, improved cholesterol levels, and reduced inflammation.

Flavanols are thought to improve nitric oxide levels, leading to reduced blood pressure, improved function of blood vessels, and lowered risk of heart attack and stroke. In addition, polyphenols may improve brain function and blood flow to your brain, resulting in decreased risk of neurodegenerative disease.

Unfortunately processing and heating cocoa can reduce the amount of these beneficial compounds resulting in various cocoa products not possessing the same benefits.

There have also been studies suggesting that the polyphenols and other compounds found in cocoa may help with asthma, lower the risk of cancer, help decrease depression and stress, and improve mood.
